Introducing KemIFST

The history of KemIFST

KemIFST was founded in 1972.

A. Eshtokin (1st Secretary of Kemerovo CPSU regional committee) initiated the opening of the new institution of higher education. Substantiating the expediency of opening technological Institute in Kemerovo region, he pointed out that from the second half of the 1960s light and food industries in the region are evolving rapidly: the volume of consumer goods production increased from 650 million rubles in 1965 to 1025 million rubles in 1970. However the activity of the existing enterprises and commissioning of new industrial facilities have been hampered due to lack of professionals with higher education. For example, there are only 8 engineers account for 1000 workers at food industry enterprises (e.g., at ferrous metallurgy and chemical industry there are 39 and 38 employees respectively). Therefore, Kuzbass was needed a higher educational institution where they could obtain an engineering degree of food industry.

September 11, 1972 is considered to be the first day of studying for KemIFST students.

At the opening time of the institute there were three faculties: mechanical, technological and extramural. The mechanical faculty started to train engineers majoring in: "Machines and Equipment for Food Production" and "Refrigerating machines and compressor systems”. The Faculty of Technology was majoring in: “Bread, Pastry and Pasta Technology”, “Meat and Meat Products Technology”, “Milk and Dairy Products Technology”, “Fermentation Technology” and “Catering Technology and Organization”.

The first years major institutions of higher education helped KemIFST in many ways. The teachers who have completed postgraduate studies at Moscow Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry, Leningrad Technological Institute of Refrigeration Industry and Moscow Technological Institute of Food Industry came to work in KemIFST. In March of 1974, 18 departments were organized and the authorization for opening of 4 more was received from the Ministry. In 1976 there were already 30 departments in KemIFST, 7 of which were graduated departments.

In June of 1977 the first graduates of our institute defended their thesis projects. Chairmen of SEB were the most well-known experts of food industry of Kuzbass. As a result, 294 engineers as part of the first graduation of food, dairy and meat industry got a start in life. The first graduation of specialists was an important step in the development of the institute. KemIFST successfully passed the way from the first admissions to the first graduation of specialists, it was a kind of test to all the staff of the Institute. As the institute develops, the number of graduates increased.

Changes in social and political situation in the country also entailed changes in the organization of KemIFST activities. The institute opened new departments. The enrollment majoring in "Fats Technology" started in 1982, "Automation of Production Processes and Automated Control Systems" in 1985, "Economy and management in the fields of agrarian and industrial complex" in 1988.

The closer links between education, industry and science have been considering during the restructuring of the institute in the 1980s. To implement these ideas a targeted intensive program of specialists training has been developed. The Ministry of Higher Education of the RSFSR in January of 1989 issued a decree on the implementation of this program in the institutions of the republic, which our institute joined. KemIFST signed agreements with the "Tomskmolagroprom" production association, Barnaul dairy plant, Zarinsk cheese-making plant, Kemerovo dairy plant and meat-processing plant. The agreements provided mechanical engineers and process engineers for these enterprises with a target intensive training.

Graduation faculties of the institute organized at the enterprises of respective industries the branches where teaching, research, laboratory, practical classes and field trips were conducted and thesis projects were defended.

Year by year the quality improves and the volume of published educational methods literature increases. For example, since 1999 the number of books published by KemIFST with signature stamps of various ministries and departments (i.e., approved for use in all institutions of higher education) increased from one edition per year (1991-1998.) to seven.

An important stage in the development of institute was the introduction of a multi-stage system of education, focused on graduates of secondary specialized schools, continuous professional training of which provides consistent performance of three stages of training: skilled worker, technician, engineer.

The Center for the continuous professional training of specialists was established in 1990, June, 28 to provide multi-stage scheme training at the institute. The center has included the Faculty of Multilevel Training, and schools (high schools and technical schools), which are the associate members of the center, and not part of the institute. In 1994 based on the order of the Russian Federation State Committee on Higher Education, Kemerovo Mechanics and Technology College was reorganized into a structural unit of KemIFST as the Faculty of Secondary Technical Education and it entered the Center of continuous training.

Also, since the beginning of the 1990s, the training of bachelors and masters began to be implemented in such areas of KemIFST as: "Food Technology", "Technological machines and equipment" and "Economy".
